Kindness Imagined

On the subway ride home tonight, there was a man begging for money whose face had been disfigured by acid. When I first saw him out of the corner of my eye, I almost couldn't believe it - he looked as though he were produced by the special effects department of a movie, with totally disformed skin and tiny holes for eyes and ears. It was so sad, seeing him, and were people not so packed into the subway car, I think he would have received quite a few donations.

Then again, New Yorkers are perhaps not as sympathetic as others, and maybe they would have shrugged it off the way they do the other subway beggars. And I didn't attempt to reach into my purse to pull out a dollar, so who am I to talk?
